I can feel it, too. Over the past few years I’ve had an uncomfortable sense that someone, or something, has been tinkering with my brain, remapping the neural circuitry, reprogramming the memory. My mind isn’t going—so far as I can tell—but it’s changing. I’m not thinking the way I used to think. I can feel it most strongly when I’m reading. Immersing myself in a book or a lengthy article used to be easy. My mind would get caught up in the narrative or the turns of the argument, and I’d spend hours strolling through long stretches of prose. That’s rarely the case anymore. Now my concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages. I get fidgety, lose the thread, begin looking for something else to do. I feel as if I’m always dragging my wayward brain back to the text. The deep reading that used to come naturally has become a struggle.
By Nicholas Carr .Read more, from here
So is this something that I m also facing ? Yeah true and not just me there are many of the category who cannot concentrate their reading on long articles n for me it becomes the worse if it is a printed one. Yeah I doubt if i m losing reading habit n recently I heard Dinsan complaining the same thing .
so here is what Mitali Saran ( who writes for the weekend special pages of Businesses standard and she is my favorite 🙂 ) says about the Nicholas’s article
“the article describes how emerging technologies -once printing press and the typewriter and now the internet – have ,through ages, seemingly messed with the very circuity of human minds ,reducing the attention span, feeding the hunger to move on ,lowering the boredom threshold ,even as they have tilled new fields of epistemic gold”
So you can all imagine ,how will this effect a girl of 16. what will happen to me if i cant concentrate on the big big chapters of my syllabus ,well that is gonna hit me really bad ! . I couldn’t even complete reading a single book in my 3 months vacation !!!! 😦 now thatz really bad . ok! I can get back to my normal life, if I control myself blogging too much . I feel a lot tensed when i think of people around ,they go for daily tuitions, weekend tuition n entrance coaching without even taking a break n i m here in front of my ASUS lady blabbering n blogging
I have decided to get back to books !( well that does nt mean i am gonna leave you in peace! 😛 ) I know its better to start with short stories or something and now have got a book of Grimm’s fairy tales with almost 55 stories in 350 pages. I love reading fairy tales no matter what my age is ,I read it with such passion . 😀
So i would sometimes miss reading n commenting in ur blogs .So sorry in advance

why cant u do both little .
AFter blogging doesn’t take much time…daily one hour is more than enough for reading and 2 hours if u wnat to write plus read others blog ..

you must checkout kindle .. from amazon.com …. if you are complaining about technology killing books
Posted by allirekha on July 13, 2008 at 3:29 pm
@vishesh :yeah but about school books,do u feel them good 😛 n i cant even complete a good book these days :((
@Arvind: Yeah doing the both little is good ..but u see i have almost 20 in my blogroll n if i comment in one i cant leave without commenting in other one 😀
well using the internet too much makes this prob ( lack of concentration power ) n im not the only one suffering yaar!
@Dinu : enthu ? technology killing books? 😕 what r u saying? 😛
Posted by Xylene on July 13, 2008 at 6:03 pm
Turing to books? good ! I would say that is a good move. But then dont quit blogging yet. You can post the book reviews once you finish reading each book. or get inspired of the chapters and write posts out of it.
Don’t apologize am happy that since you are moving out for a while, my blog will be free of Rekha-Dinsan fights. 😀
just kidding.
Posted by Joel on July 13, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Dont worry I would join you in couple of weeks or so. And what Arvind told is correct. We should try to blog as well as read our books. We can do both actually.
Blogging though you cannot do everyday…may be once in two or three days..! (which includes reading also) And ya it may take atleast an hour or two in doing so..not much time.
And also I liked Xylene’s idea too.. 🙂 Blog your chapters…Kind of recalling your studies.. 😉
I think I would be implementing it when my coll starts… 😉
Posted by allirekha on July 13, 2008 at 7:56 pm
@xylene :I dont need to post my chapter review in here i ll do that in my exams 😛
hmm what a great response !! believe me Dinsan will find a new opponent to fight with n will continue adipidi forum 😆 😛
@Joel: ok welcome in advance buddy! im not just talking about blogging u see using internet too much kills ur concentration n attention power ..n yeah im not leaving my blog anyways i ll be always around somewhere here 😀 .Blogging though has got some disadvantages is a great medium to express ourself n to get new friends 😉 n a lot more cool things !!!

Well i dint blame blogs only :(( …my blog is one key reason that makes me switch on to my system atleast 2 hours a day 😀

taking a break…? 😦 anyways, if u are feeling the burnout really, continue… u’ve made a good plan abt what to do… school books bore us to death, but they are the ones which (apparently) help us survive… be back soon and livlier than ever… 🙂
Posted by allirekha on July 13, 2008 at 10:36 pm

Well, I don’t know. I don’t think it’s because of blogging that you can’t read books or concentrate. Maybe the book you were trying to read wasn’t too interesting for you? When you read blogs, and people make huge posts, you read them if you find them interesting. Otherwise you just skim through them. I was reading this book called The Man. It was nice but it wasn’t exactly interesting. And it took me around a month to complete it, it was 700 or something pages I guess. Then I started with Digital Fortress and it took me a week. That too was 700 pages. I could’ve done it faster but I’m a lazy reader. So, it might just not be blogging that is causing this.
But anyway, books are great. Good to see you trying to get back to reading them. As far as concentration is concerned, I can’t advice you on that much because people asked me to do a lot of things that could help me to concentrate but I never followed any. 😛

Read books at night and blog at other times 😛
Books can give you very peaceful sleep while blogging gives you eye problems. 😀
And where u got that “take me with you” wala pic? I want one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by allirekha on July 15, 2008 at 7:56 pm
@Suda
well u need that girl’s pic .eh? 😆
Posted by RJ on July 15, 2008 at 10:12 pm
@Rekha – Read when you are travelling, before sleep, in the restroom, bus stops etc. Write when you have a mind which wants to speak out! You can read and write at the same time, it;s all about how you manage it 🙂
Also, I read somewhere – Do, or do not. There is no ‘try’
🙂

I think this blog is a very diplomatic way of saying, “I need a break! Leave me alone!”
Hehehe!! 😀
Posted by wasshappening on July 16, 2008 at 11:23 pm
You can do both i guess…Spend one hour on each…
🙂
@Rj

Um, you can always edit that image being used as your header and put your blog’s heading there. Yes, I know the title of it but someone else who’s visiting first time may not.
Posted by Initial-M on July 21, 2008 at 10:47 am

blogging your chapters is a great idea….it will keep the number of hits down as well..lol! 😀
Posted by Manasa on July 30, 2008 at 10:45 pm
First things first! When there weren’t any blogs introduced a few years ago, it was books which kept me away from boredom. So books have had much priority than blogs :))
Posted by allirekha on August 1, 2008 at 3:42 pm
@ Nick
what an idea SArjii!!
hey Welcome to my desert 🙂
@ Manasa
Yeah ! books should have more priority than blogs!! 🙂
